What is fold-over elastic / FOE?
Fold-over elastic (FOE) is an elastic band folded in the middle that encloses the fabric edge. It replaces traditional binding tape and is especially popular in lingerie sewing because it is soft, stretchy, and decorative.
What is fold-over elastic used for?
Fold-over elastic is used to finish elastic fabric edges, for example on underwear, bras, panties, bodysuits, tops, swimwear, T-shirt necklines, leg openings, and waistbands.
How much fold-over elastic do I need for a bra?
For a bra, you need about 1.5–2 meters for the neckline, straps, and back band combined. For panties, about 2–3 meters.
Can I sew the fold-over elastic with an overlock machine?
Yes – fold-over elastic can be sewn with a sewing machine (zigzag, stretch stitch, twin needle) as well as with an overlock machine. When folding, simply crease it in the middle and place it over the fabric edge.
Can I use the band on both sides?
Yes, one side is shiny, the other side is matte. Both sides can be worn on the outside depending on the desired look.
Which color suits my project?
Choose a color that matches the outer fabric or creates a deliberate color accent. Cream and white for light fabrics, black for dark designs, burgundy or purple for an elegant contrast.
How wide is this fold-over elastic?
